The game takes place in the Meridian Empire, a country plagued by creatures called Feldragons, that, when killed, poisons the entire area surrounding its demise.  Unfortunately, a huge horde of these Feldragons have headed straight for the capital city Diamant, and the army is sent to stop them.  Part of this army is the L’Arc, a cool headed mercenary and the main character of the game. Alongside him is his friend and the royal prince Alf, second in line to the throne.  Upon injury, L’Arc meets Ryfia, a secretive young woman who can control ley squalls, naturally occurring storms that appear iridescent.  They are also accompanied by Adele, L’Arc’s childhood friend, who aids them with the curious combat form called Luminomancy.  As the game progresses, new characters are introduced, loyalties are challenged, and promises are betrayed, and all the while the threat of the Feldragons still looms.

Gameplay is turn-based, as is the norm for these kinds of role-playing games.  While the player and the enemy move simultaneously, turns are determined by the actions chosen.  Parties consist of three characters who share a single AP gauge, which decreases incrementally based on the actions performed.  Multiple attacks can become a string of combos, and all three characters together can execute a Trinity Act, a special attack that occurs when each character uses a certain ability.  And, as in many a Japanese RPG, there is the indomitable presence of summon beasts, in this game called the Rogress.

Arc Rise Fantasia seems to hold some real promise, with the developers behind Luminous Arc, the soundtrack composer of Chrono Trigger and Xenogears, and the main character wielding a sword three times his body size.  Any fan of the Japanese RPG should be eager to add Arc Rise Fantasia to their collection.
